September 25th, 2007 Samsung SGH-U600 Review

I’ve recently bought the Samsung U600 and I have to say it “Samsung did it again”. The U600 is the slimmest slide phone ever, measuring an astonishing 10.9mm thickness. It is a new model featuring a 3 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, and a nice music player. The Samsung U600 is the first of the second-generation Ultra phones to hit the market and is the replacement for the very popular Samsung D900 ultra-slim slide phone. At just 10.9 mm it’s even thinner than the D900, making it the slimmest slide phone available.

As well as making it thinner, Samsung have shaved a couple of millimeters off the width of the phone, which is a very good thing, because flat wide phones are not as ergonomic as conventionally-sized phones. And if you thinking about weight the Samsung U600 is 10 g lighter than the D900, making it an extremely lightweight phone. Another important aspect of the u600 is the touch sensitive external buttons (the ones you see when the slide is closed).Looking at the other features, the camera is Samsung’s best yet, and it comes with a high-resolution 3.2 megapixel resolution, LED flash, autofocus, incorporates CCD-shift image stabilization and digital zoom.Picture of Samsung SGH-U600 front and side

The only bad thing about the camera is the delay from pressing the button to the actual picture being taken which is about 2 seconds, I guess that is caused by the stabilization sensor, so it makes it hard to catch fast moving objects. There’s also a good quality video camera. The display is high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) with 262,144 colors and is excellent. The music player supports a wide range of formats - MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-AAC+ - and has very good sound reproduction. You can use the stereo headset supplied by Samsung or a wireless Bluetooth headset. You can also listen to music through the built-in loudspeaker which features a Bang & Olufsen digital power amplifier.

The battery is less powerful than the D900’s, but Samsung claim that battery performance has actually been improved due to a new technology called OPUS (Optimized Power Usage Solution). My battery life is about 4-5 day’s, I achieved this by doing some settings , which I will explain in a later post. User memory is about 60 Mbytes so if you like to store more songs on your phone you will have to add a Micro SD card. The max memory card possible for this phone is a 2 Gbyte card, with storage for around 500 songs.

A PC data link kit is included in the sales package, for transferring music from a PC. The messaging on Samsung U600 is cool looking and it includes support for email attachments and a document viewer for viewing MS Office, PDF and HTML files. The available EDGE connection is nice for fast downloads.

Other features that I would like to point out is , the quad band operating frequency, wireless photo printing with PicBridge compatible printers and the TV-Out connector for viewing your photos and videos directly on a TV. To finish this review, The Samsung U600 is a lightweight, ultra-slim, sexy-slider phone, that’s what made me buy it.

Here is some pictures i took with the phone , so you can see the quality:

Ok I made a mistake, but people do make mistakes, now I’m going to tell you why I think you shouldn’t buy this motherboard. This is a cheap mb, about 85 $, its true there are cases when cheap motherboards turn to be good, this was not the case. The first impression a small box, few accessories (1 x SATA cable, 1 x IDE cable, 1 x FDD and the back panel). After I assembled all together ( the MB , Athlon 64 4400 dual core , 320 gb Western Digital SATA hard disk and 1 x 1 gb DDR2 800 Mhz) I started installing the os , everything ok.

M2N-E SLI socket Am2 motherboard

After the firs reboot I noticed the first problem, long boot time it wanted to install the OS from my boot cd, and the first problem appeared; although the bios settings were on Defaults when I tried to boot from cd it said something about “no disk installed” I had to do some research and found out that it was a problem caused by a setting in BIOS so I made the change from HDD acces mode “Auto” to “Large” and finally the Os setup started. The next problem didn’t take long to appear, on first reboot I noticed a long boot time about 2,5 mins, as a new generation computer I expected it to boot faster.

After that I had some problems with the drivers from Asus cd, I don’t remember exactly but some of the drivers had to be installed manually. And to say something about the motherboards performance the overall performance was categorized by me as slow, not a good impression. I have to say I did liked one of the motherboard features very much the ASUS Q-Connector which lets you connect really easy the USB and audio ports from the case to the motherboard. After a few days’ of testing because all of this happened I went back to the store and returned the MB in exchange for another motherboard which I will review later.

Here’s some of the Asus M2N-E SLI features that made me buy it:

  • Support AMD Socket AM2 CPU
  • NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI Technology
  • Dual channel DDR2 800
  • ASUS Q-Connector
  • NVIDIA SLI™ Technology
  • Fanless Design
  • Gigbit LAN

You can see the full specifications list at Asus M2N-E SLI website

I’m going to write a review for this motherboard because in my opinion is the best choice for an AMD socket 754 processor. Although the socket it’s become old and few people are buying it from stores it remains a reliable motherboard. I bought one 4 years ago and I have to tell you it made my life easier , 4 years of continuous usage with 0 problems , 0 bugs. From driver’s support to design is perfect. The UV design made this an interesting experience, the sockets and all the connecting cables are UV sensitive so I placed a UV neon inside the case (the case had window) that made the MB glow really nice.
The mb featured some Ez switches placed directly on the board for Power on and Reset, which is helpful when you are testing new components with the motherboard out of the case; 5 pci slots is more than enough for the home user, I only had an additional network card and a Tv tuner; the 8CH Audio (Dolby 7.1, 8ch supported) sounded really good on my Logitech 5.1 Z-5500.On the performance side DFI has built a solid reputation with the LANParty series designed for overclockers and gamers.

Anyone looking for top performance and the best overclocking capabilities should include DFI on they’re shopping list. I never tried to overclock my system it was enough for me with the default setup (Amd Athlon 64 3200+ 754 socket , LAN PARTY UT nF3 250Gb , 2 x 512 ram PC3200 and 120 gb Seagate Sata II hard disk).Next here’s a list of the motherboards features :

  • 8CH Audio (Dolby 7.1, 8ch supported)
  • Gigabit LAN (with nVIDIA Gigabit Ethernet)
  • nVIDIA RAID
  • nVIDIA Firewall (Embedded hardware firewall)
  • 100%Japanese Capacitors
  • Brand New Genie BIOS
  • EZ-on / EZ-touch on board power switch
  • UV sensitive slots

You can get full specifications list at LAN PARTY UT nF3 250Gb site. If I had to choose the best motherboard from the ones I’d seen and tested this is the one. On present day I use my system listed above as a personal server where I test Debian Linux scripts and software packages.
