Use the hot air on the opposite side of the board, heat the pcb right under the part that you want to desolder until it reaches the required temp and the SMT parts will fall right off at the smallest touch.
On TH parts its a bit difficult, I usually don't try to desolder those but if I have to I use a solder pump.

How do you dessolder heat sensitive components (like connectors with plastics, electrolytic capacitors) without damaging them?

I use an hot air soldering station but the platics melts before the solder.
The solder requires more than 210 ºC to melt an it ruins electolytics and plastics.

And not to mention the damn plated trough holes filled with solder and connected to large power planes which cary the haet aawy making it impossible do dessolder connectors.

I realize it has been quite sometime since you posted this but I was wondering if you still had the Fairchild FDD8880 and 8896 available.

Thanks,
Kevin

Do you still have any of these components? I could use the 4422 MOSFETs if you do. Obviously I would pay for shipping them to me (In Canada).

I recently had a similar experience acquiring a lot of 'useless' odds and ends'. A friend and I took the parts and installed them into a wooden treasure chest that looked like a pirate's treasure chest. Beveled the inside of the lid and attached the lcd display then attached the mother board and other hardware into the lower portion of the chest. After making a few minor cuts for the cd/dvd and power buttons etc. we sealed the box and presented it to a young friend. She loved it! it looks from the front when closed like a jewelery chest but once opened and plugged in she can surf the net.
